Teeth Veneer: The Growing Trend
In today’s world, a person’s appearance can inadvertently affect their self-confidence. While some may not be bothered by it, many people opt for dental procedures, such as teeth veneer, to enhance their looks.
Veneers have become a popular trend, with some even traveling abroad to get this dental treatment.
Jack James, a 22-year-old model from Manchester, decided to get teeth veneers in September 2022 to “look better on camera.” He traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, and paid £3,000 for a set of veneers.
A Warning for Those Considering Teeth Veneer Abroad
Initially, Jack was pleased with the results. However, a few months later, he experienced bleeding and “bad breath,” prompting him to seek emergency dental care.
Jack shared his experience with the Mirror, saying, “They looked good until they started bleeding and hurting. They started oozing pus. My breath smelled.”
After an examination, he was informed that his teeth were in poor condition and would cost £20,000 (around IDR 382 million) to fix.
In desperation due to the high costs in the UK, Jack contacted the clinic in Turkey to seek help. However, they insisted it was not their fault and demanded additional payment for the fix.
The Fate of Jack’s Teeth
In June 2023, Jack decided to fly back to Turkey and paid £4,500 (approximately IDR 86 million) for the dental repair.
Jack recounted the ordeal of having all his teeth and abscesses removed, and temporary teeth were put in. It took a few weeks for the infection to heal.
However, he was shocked to discover that his original teeth had been shaved off, leaving them looking “like sharks.”
Despite receiving a new set of veneers and returning to the UK, the problems persisted. One of his teeth’s crown “suddenly came off” while he was brushing, leaving a gap.
“It felt like a horror movie,” Jack described.
A Lesson in Research
Jack now urges others to thoroughly research before seeking dental treatments abroad.
“I’m so mad at myself. I feel like pulling all my teeth out. I wish I had done composite bonding at the time, but I can’t change the past,” he said.
Dental Care Challenges in the UK
Jack’s experience is not unique, as one out of four people in the UK struggles to secure dental appointments.
This has led patients to seek dental treatments abroad out of desperation.
Dr. Gülay Akay, CEO of Dentakay, highlighted the remarkable increase in the number of patients coming to Turkey from the UK.
“There is no doubt that the crisis in the NHS (National Health Service) is driving people in the UK to seek treatment elsewhere,” she stated.
Negative Impact of Teeth Veneer
Teeth veneers have gained immense popularity today. These tooth coverings, made from porcelain or composite resin materials, are attached to the front surface of teeth to enhance their appearance permanently.
Veneers effectively treat various cosmetic issues, such as chipped, broken, discolored, or smaller-than-average teeth. They can address problems related to tooth color, length, size, and shape.
However, like any dental procedure, there can be side effects. These issues may range from appearance to dental health. Additionally, veneers can be damaged if you bite or chew on hard objects like ice, hard foods, or even nails. Let’s take a closer look at the potential side effects of teeth veneers.
