WH girls win battle of ‘Cats to open year


Whitehouse opened the 2017 volleyball season with a sweep over the Hallsville Lady Bobcats.

In varsity competition, the Ladycats rushed to a 25-15 win in the first game, but Hallsville rebounded to upend Whitehouse 25-17 in the second game. The Lady Bobcats maintained momentum to prevail 25-19 in the third game to put the pressure on Whitehouse.

The Ladycats responded and knotted the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth game. That set up the tie-breaker and Whitehouse was able to edge the Lady Bobcats 15-13 to claim the match.

Briana Brown posted 10 kills; Grace Hendricks finished with eight kills, 18 assists and 18 digs; and Kaitlyn Wood recorded eight kills and four blocks. Also for Whitehouse, Sydney Malmstrom added seven kills and seven blocks to the team totals; Sydnie Davis finished with five kills and five blocks; and Macy Smith led the team with 25 digs.

In junior varsity action, the Ladycats posted wins of 25-17 and 25-19 to claim the match. Whitehouse also won the freshman match 25-18, 25-18.

Whitehouse played in the Duncanville tournament last weekend and reached the championship bracket.

The Ladycats played at Carthage Tuesday, Aug. 15, and will host a dual match with Texas High and Robert E. Lee Thursday, Aug. 17. Action will start at 4:30 p.m.

The Ladycats will play at Arp, starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22.
