Tyler Aggie Moms have announced the first of what they hope will become an annual fund-raiser event. The scholarship dinner and silent auction is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27, at Hollytree Country Club, (6700 Hollytree Drive in Tyler).
Congressman Louie Gohmert, who serves in the US House of Representatives from Texas District 1, is slated to be the guest speaker at the event. Gohmert received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M and is expected to share some stories from his time in Aggieland.
The silent auction is set to start at 6 p.m. with the dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be approximately 25 items to bid on including a variety of interests and tastes. A couple of the auction items are a gift certificate for a veterinarian check up with first round of shots provided by Drs. Jeff Lancaster and Sharon Phillips of Tyler Veterinary Center and a “Let Them Eat Cake” basket with an assortment of cakes and gift certificates to popular cake locations in Tyler.
Being hosted by Tyler Aggie Moms, one might expect Aggie-themed items to be up for auction, too. Two such inclusions are a “Battle of the Sauce” package that includes his and hers Aggie aprons with gift certificates to several barbecue restaurants in Tyler as well as gift certificates to Aggieland Outfitters, a popular college Station apparel and gift shop.
The proceeds of the dinner and auction will go into the scholarship fund. Tyler Aggie Moms have averaged from 25 to 30 scholarships for Texas A&M students over the last few years, according to Rebecca Mohr, president of Tyler Aggie Moms. She also reported there are currently 29 applicants this year and they do not have to be children of members to apply, though the club’s focus is on students from the local area.
Tyler Aggie Moms is one of 108 members which are a part of the Federation of Texas A&M University Mothers’ Clubs. The federation began in February 1922 and the Tyler chapter was organized in Feb. 1949. The Tyler organization is a non-profit which meets monthly, usually the third Thursday, at Pollard United Methodist Church in Tyler.
The monthly meetings usually include a program, often with a guest speaker.
If you would like to attend the silent auction and dinner scheduled Tuesday, March 27, a ticket will be required and must be purchased by Thursday, March 15. Individual tickets cost $50 each. To become a sponsor of the event, $150 will include two dinner tickets, premium reserved seating and acknowledgment both verbally and in print at the dinner.
