“The long hours and enormous responsibilities of school board service often are not visible to those who may not fully understand the challenges facing public education,” said James B. Crow, executive director of the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) in regards to the governor’s proclamation that January was School Board Recognition Month.
“Yet, these local trustees embrace hard work as they demonstrate compassion and concern for the success and well-being of every Texas student. They work closely with parents and educators to develop sound education policies in their districts and set high standards for student success,” Crow said.
The members of the Troup Independent School Board of Trustees are among those working hard to ensure the best for the district they serve. Each member is elected to serve a three year term on a completely volunteer basis. The board’s current members include Chuck Boyd, Shane Jasper, Gene Whitsell, John Whitsell, Lisa Lewis, and Clayton Vickers.
Chuck Boyd, Place 2, is the most recent addition to the board of trustees, having been elected in 2017. Lisa Lewis, Place 6, and Clayton Vickers, Place 7, have both served since their election in 2016. John Whitsell, Place 5 was elected in 2015 and Shane Jasper, Place 3, was elected to the board in 2014. Gene Whitsell, first elected in 2012, is currently the longest serving member of the board of trustees.
“This board is very special to me,” said TISD Superintendent Stuart Bird. “Of course, I’ve been working with them a long time. They do a great job. They are very dedicated to this school district. They are sincere in wanting to do what is best for district.”
The board members were each presented with tokens of appreciation at the regular meeting Tuesday, Jan. 9, which included a Troup Tiger hoodie and a goody bag from Sweet Gourmet.
