Tigers to host Glen Evans Classic


Troup will host the Glen Evans Classic Thursday and Friday, Dec. 28-29. All games will be played in the Troup High School Varsity Gymnasium and the teams will include Beckville, Carlisle, Frankston, New Summerfield and Troup.

The Tigers will start tourney action with New Summerfield at 10 a.m. Thursday. Other games played Thursday include Beckville vs. Carlisle at 11:15 a.m.; Frankston vs. Troup at 12:30 p.m.; New Summerfield vs. Beckville at 1:45 p.m.; and Carlisle vs. Frankston at 3 p.m.

The Friday schedule includes Beckville vs. Frankston at 10 a.m.; New Summerfield vs. Carlisle at 11:15 a.m.; Troup vs. Beckville at 12:30 p.m.; Frankston vs. New Summerfield at 1:45 p.m.; and Carlisle vs. Troup at 3 p.m.

The Tigers defeated Kennard in non-district competition last week, and Troup opened District 15-3A competition with a win over Harmony. Troup entered the tournament with a 15-2 season mark and 1-0 in the district standings.

The Tigers had a strong start with 20 points in the first quarter in the game with Kennard Friday, Dec. 22. After taking a 36-16 lead into the halftime break, the Tigers left no doubt about the outcome with a 10-2 run in the third stanza.

Jared Jackson and Shane Thomas paced the offense with 19 and 15 points, respectively, and Cobie Hamilton contributed eight points. Grayson Driggs and Jim Christopher recorded five apiece and Weslee Ross scored two. Jackson rattled the rim for a trio of three-point buckets and Hamilton dropped in a pair from long distance.

Jermaine Leonard led Kennard with 22 points, including three from three-point range.

Troup 61, Harmony 28

District 15-3A has strong teams but Harmony did not prove so in the loop opener for the Eagles and Tigers Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Troup dominated from the start that featured a 15-4 run in the opening frame. By halftime, the Tigers were atop a 31-13 score and a 19-4 third-quarter advantage sealed the win. Troup pocketed a 61-28 victory to open district play.

Jackson popped the net for another trio of three-pointers and he finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. Driggs found the range on a pair of three-point buckets and he scored 12 points, Quincy Kincade recorded six points from a pair of long-range baskets and Jones Ard also hit one from three-point range and finished with five points.

Ross also scored five points, Cobie Hamilton added three to the team total on a three-point basket and Kris Johnson and Christopher each scored two points.

Cameron Helpenstill and Trey Buckley each scored nine points to lead Harmony. Each hit a three-point basket.
