After playing 23 games for the 2017-2018 hoops season, Troup is 21-2 and moving steadily toward the State playoffs.
The Tigers conquered Sabine and Cumberland Academy last week to improve to 3-0 in the District 15-3A standings. Troup will play at West Rusk at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, and will travel to Arp Tuesday, Jan. 16. Tip-off at Arp will be at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers will conclude the first round of loop competition when they host Winona Friday, Jan. 19.
Troup 62, Sabine 52
The Cardinals matched the Tigers point-for-point in the first quarter and when the dust settled the two squads were knotted up at 15-15. The Troup defense kicked in during the second frame and that allowed the Tigers to ease to a 30-22 halftime advantage.
During the third period, Sabine rallied for 18 points and held Troup to 13 points to cut the Tigers’ lead to 43-40 as the two teams began the fourth-quarter battle.
The Tigers were able to hold off a Sabine rally in the fourth frame with a 19-12 run on the scoreboard. Troup pulled away for a 62-52 victory.
Eylan Goodwyn and Will Shawn paced Sabine with 22 and 16 points respectively, but Troup had four players in double figures to offset the Sabine duo. Shane Thomas paced the Tigers with 16 points, Jared Jackson and Jones Ard pumped in a dozen apiece and Weslee Ross contributed 11 points. Ross dropped a pair of three-point buckets and Jackson and Cobie Hamilton each scored a three-point shot. Grayson Driggs added eight points to the Troup total and Hamilton finished with three.
Also for Sabine, Travion Olive recorded six points, Nathan Willis added four and Hunter Grotemat and Glenn George scored two apiece.
Sabine fell to 14-6 for the season and to 2-1 in the district standings.
In the junior varsity contest, Troup edged the Cardinals 50-48.

Troup 61, Cumberland Academy 53
The Knights are an improved squad and it certainly showed during the first quarter when Cumberland jumped out to an 18-15 lead at home last week.
The visiting Tigers rallied in the second stanza to take a slight 31-29 lead. Troup added a little more room between the two scores with a 19-12 run in the third period. The Tigers anticipated a rally by the Knights in the fourth quarter so the 50-41 advantage was necessary.
Cumberland did outscore the Tigers in the final minutes, but by only a single point. Troup held on for a 61-53 victory.
Jackson popped the net for five three-point baskets and he finished with 33 points to lead all scorers. Ross and Jackson each dropped in a bucket beyond the arc. Thomas contributed 18 toward the victory, Ard added six, Ross finished with five, Johnson had three and Driggs scored two points.
Caleb Watts also dropped in a three-pointer and finished with 15 points to pace the Knights. Also for Cumberland, Nate Navarro scored 13, Greg Kennedy added nine, Sincere Norman finished with eight, Jackson Woodard recorded four and Carlson Johnson and Trey Turner scored two apiece. Woodward and Watts also dropped in a three-point bucket.
Cumberland Academy fell to 0-2 in the district standings following the loss to Troup.
