It is never easy to win a district championship in a sport but Troup captured back-to-back basketball titles in District 15-3A competition.
The Tigers defeated Winona 61-44 to finish the regular season with a 29-3 record that includes an 11-1 mark in the district standings. Troup played a playoff warm-up game with Laneville at Frankston Friday, Feb. 16, and was scheduled to play the bi-district contest with Elysian Fields Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Union Grove. The winner of the Troup-Elysian Fields game will play the winner of the Hughes Springs-Prairiland game in area action.
Troup 61, Winona 44
The Tigers concluded the regular season with a convincing 61-44 victory over Winona in District 15-3A competition. Troup jumped out to a 14-7 lead and held a 30-20 halftime advantage. A 13-9 run pushed the Troup lead to 43-39 and the Tigers had no trouble posting an 18-15 lead in the final frame.
Winona played well for a team that finished with a 2-22 record, including a 1-11 mark in the district standings.
For the Tigers, Jared Jackson and Shane Thomas scored 20 points apiece, Jones Ard recorded six, Grayson Driggs finished with five, Kris Johnson scored four, Cobie Hamilton contributed three, Jim Christopher scored two and Logan Stone scored one point.
Dakota Pullum led Winona with 13 points, Kendrick Peavy scored 11, Zach Francis finished with six, Kameron Smalls and Ashton Smith scored five apiece and KJ Kincade and Nic Garrett contributed two each.
Troup defeated Winona 72-29 in the junior varsity contest. The Troup junior varsity won the district title at 11-1 and was 23-3 for the season.
