Tigers open gridiron season Sept. 1

Troup football will begin in about 60 days.

For the Tigers, the goal is to improve on last season’s 4-6 season record, including 2-4 in the district standings. Troup placed fourth in the district and just missed out in advancing to the playoffs.

The Tigers will scrimmage at Sabine Friday, Aug. 18, at a time to be announced. They will follow that with another scrimmage when they host Union Grove Thursday, Aug. 24, also at a time to be announced.

Two-a-days will start in early August in preparation for the regular season that will start with Spring Hill at home at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1. It will be the only 7 p.m. start for the Tigers. All of the remaining games will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers will enter the 2017 season with about a dozen seniors from last year’s squad gone from the roster. Included in that experienced group was the entire left side of the offensive line, so head coach John Eastman and his staff will be looking to replace a stout group.

Hopefully, the offensive line will be in place by the second regular season game at Ore City on Friday, Sept. 8.

Homecoming will be early in the 2017 season. They Tigers will host Elkhart for their Homecoming game Friday, Sept. 15.

Back-to-back road trips will follow the Homecoming game, including at Westwood Friday, Sept. 22, and at Beckville to open District 9-3A, Division II competition Friday, Sept. 29.

The Tigers will host West Rusk Friday, Oct. 6, and rest with a bye week Friday, Oct. 13.

Following the bye week, Troup will travel to Harleton Friday, Oct. 20, and will host rival Arp Friday, Oct. 27.

The Tigers will play at Waskom Friday, Nov. 3, and conclude the regular season when they host Elysian Fields Friday, Nov. 10.

The junior varsity also will scrimmage at Sabine Friday, Aug. 18, and host Union Grove Thursday, Aug. 24. The junior varsity will open the regular season at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Spring Hill.

The Troup Middle School will open the season hosting Elkhart at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.
