Raiders unable to cage Tigers

Five Troup players scored in double figures and the Tigers rolled to an 80-41 victory over West Rusk in District 15-3A competition Friday, Jan. 12.

The game featured 15 three-point baskets, including three apiece by Weslee Ross, Jared Jackson and Grayson Griggs. Jones Ard, by the way, dropped in a pair of three-pointers.

The long-range shots helped the Tigers jump out to a formidable 23-10 lead in the first quarter, and by the end of the first half, Troup was in command of a 46-20 advantage. The flow of the game did not improve for the Raiders in the third quarter. Troup used a 19-11 run in the frame to pull away to a 65-31 lead, and the Tigers scored 25 more points in the fourth quarter.

Jackson led all scorers with 23 points, and Ross and Driggs contributed 13 points apiece. Shane Thomas and Ard each added 10 points, Cobie Hamilton scored five (including a three-point bucket), Jim Christopher finished with four and Kris Johnson scored two points.

For the Raiders, LJ Harper paced the squad with a dozen points, Talon Winings added nine, Dee Johnson scored eight, Dylan Walker contributed five, Dom Sanchez posted three and Aundre Austin and Jordan White scored two points apiece. Walker and Sanchez each scored a three-point basket.

The Raiders fell to 2-2 in the district standings.

Troup also defeated West Rusk in the junior varsity game 39-36.

The Tigers played at Arp Tuesday, Jan. 16, and will conclude the first round through the district schedule when they host Winona at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19. Troup will play at Harmony to start the second round of the district schedule at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, and will host Cumberland Academy Friday, Jan. 26.
