The District 9-3A football team standings went topsy-turvy after Harleton upset Beckville 8-6 in a defensive battle Friday, Oct. 6.
Beckville was undefeated, while Harleton was winless going into last week’s match-up. Waskom had an open date last week, so that leaves the Wildcats, Elysian Fields and the West Rusk Raiders as the only two teams unbeaten in loop action.
Before the start of the 2017 season, Arp was considered to be a contender for the district crown. The Tigers were shut out 37-0 at the hands of the Elysian Fields Yellow Jackets Friday and Arp fell to 1-4 for the season.
West Rusk blanked Troup 38-0 last week, so Elysian Fields sits atop the standings at 2-0, while West Rusk and Waskom sport a 1-0 loop mark.
Harleton is 1-1 after the upset last week, while Beckville fell to 1-1. Troup and Arp are 0-2.
Arp will have a chance to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot with a win this week. Arp will travel to Beckville and West Rusk will host Harleton. Waskom will be at Elysian Fields so one of the two teams will remain unbeaten in district competition.
Troup has the bye this week.
In a must-win game for Troup next week, the Tigers will play at Harleton. Also on Friday, Oct. 20, Waskom will host Beckville and Arp will host West Rusk. Elysian Fields will be open.
A few key future contests include West Rusk at Waskom on Oct. 27, and Elysian Fields will host West Rusk Friday, Nov. 3.
Troup will close out the season hosting Arp Friday, Oct. 27; is playing at Waskom Friday, Nov. 3; and is hosting Elysian Fields Friday, Nov. 10.
