Pair of wins put Troup Lady Tigers in the hunt

With wins over Sabine and Cumberland Academy last week, Troup is right in the mix for a run to the District 15-3A title.

The Lady Tigers will play at West Rusk at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, to conclude the first round through the district schedule. They will open the second round through at Arp Tuesday, Jan. 16. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Victories over Cumberland and Sabine left Troup with a 14-6 season mark and a 4-1 record in loop competition.

Troup 50, Sabine 48

Down by 10 points, 34-24, at the start of the fourth quarter, Troup rallied for 26 points and a very exciting finish to edge Sabine 50-48. The Lady Cardinals were unbeaten in district play before the two teams met Friday, Jan. 5.

Sabine jumped out to an 11-4 lead early but the Troup offense started to roll in the second frame. The Cardinals were able to stay on top 24-15 by halftime, and a 13-9 run by Sabine in the third quarter set up the Troup comeback in the final stanza.

Asia Parker was a force for Troup with 20 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Ty Moon contributed 13 points that included a trio of three-pointers and had five boards. Kori Minnix led the team at the boards with nine rebounds, and she finished with eight points and a trio of steals. Also, Renee Dennis grabbed two steals and had five points (including a three-point basket), Alyssa Hearon posted six boards, four assists and two points and Jayla Starks finished with five rebounds and two points.

Kristen Stuart dropped in a three-points shot and ended the contest with 24 points to lead Sabine. G. Willett also popped in a three-pointer and finished with 10 points and Gracie Taylor scored five points.

Sabine dropped to 3-1 in the district standings.

Troup 63, Cumberland 34

Minnix and the Lady Tigers stormed to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter and by halftime Troup was sitting on a 26-18 advantage. The Lady Knights stayed close in the third stanza, but Troup used a 21-5 run in the fourth quarter to leave no doubt about the final outcome. The Lady Tigers won with ease and posted a 63-24 victory.

Minnix dominated with 23 points and she grabbed nine rebounds. Moon, who rattled in a three-pointer, finished with 18 points and Starks pounded the boards for eight rebounds and she added eight points. Hearon collected seven boards, Emily Neel pumped in six points, Dennis finished with four points and four steals and Parker contributed four points and six boards.
