Funeral services for Opal Martin, 89, Good Springs, were held Sunday, Feb. 5, at Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Reverend Duane Dougherty officiating. Interment followed at Concord Cemetery under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
Opal Martin passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017 at Oak Wood Place Assisted Living in Athens. She was born on Jan. 18, 1928 at the home of her grandpa in Concord, Cherokee County. She was the daughter of Oda Campbell Martin of Trinity County and Sam Jones Martin of Concord. She was one of nine children.
She married Hubert Ned Martin of Concord on June 28, 1946. That union produced a son, Randall Hugh Martin and wife Beth of Martin’s Mill; two daughters, Cherry Diane Alewine and husband Glenn of Good Springs and Kay Lynn Berry and husband Kenny of Kerens. Opal had four grandchildren: Lee Stuart Martin and wife Jennifer of Villa Grove, Illinois, Meredith Marie Daniel and husband Ron of Walton, Mathew Grant Berry and wife Kimberly and Amy Danielle Herzog and husband Nick all of Mildred. She had four great grandchildren: Philip Martin Daniel, Madelynn Grace Berry, Kailee Faith Berry and Troy Gene Herzog.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Cherry, and all her siblings
She was a member of the Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church and an active member of her community. She was also a long-time supporter of Carlisle ISD, where she was cafeteria supervisor for many years.
Pallbearers were her nephews, Gene Martin, Sam Martin, Larry Martin, Ray Bridges, Kenny Bridges, Bobby Keith, Mark Keith and Scott Keith.
Honorary Pallbearers were Charlie Mahaffey, Wayne Martin, Kenny Martin and Col. John Christie.
