A new set of doors is set to open at 301 Terry Street in Whitehouse on Sept. 1. The REC is now accepting membership applications.
The Whitehouse YMCA, a branch of the Tyler YMCA, is set to vacate their home of 16-plus years at the end of August. After two years of talks with the City of Whitehouse, the owner of the building and the property, the two could not come to an agreement to renew the YMCA’s contract for use of the facility.
Tyler YMCA President and Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Bumgardner said they are still exploring options to continue offering YMCA programs and membership in Whitehouse. He stated they are not going to take any after school program registrations for WISD student until they have a site secured for the entire 2017-18 school year. YMCA Youth Soccer will take place at Pollard Park in Tyler along with flag football.
The REC (recreation, education and community) will begin accepting applications Friday, Aug. 4 with a registration table set up at the City of Whitehouse city council chambers at the corner of Main Street and Bascom Road. The REC director Anthony Johnson says they are eager to begin serving the Whitehouse community.
Memberships are $30 for adults, $10 for teens (with adult membership), and kids are free (12 & under with adult membership), $50 for a family. Registration fee is $29 up to 64 years of age and free for $65 and over.
Discounts include: 50 percent off for Whitehouse residents (must present a City of Whitehouse water bill as proof of city residency); $5 off for EFT (electronic funds transfer); $5 off Veterans/ Active Duty Military /First Responders/Seniors 65 and over with one discount per membership. Corporate memberships will also be offered.
After School Care will be $45 per child with a $45 registration fee. The After School Care will be a safe structured environment for your children that will include homework time, snack, center time and play time.
Johnson says The REC will be offering art classes and karate along with many other youth related sports and activities.
“Our goal is to make The REC the place to be in Whitehouse,” Johnson added.
On Saturday, Aug. 12, 12- 5 p.m., The REC is inviting people to The Splash Park in Whitehouse for a free fun afternoon, right before the kids go back to school. Membership signups will be available that day too.
Bumgardner reminds all current Whitehouse YMCA members that their members also gives them membership access at the Tyler YMCA where there is a four-lane heated indoor saltwater pool, hot tubs in both locker rooms, a full-size hardwood basketball court, 1/8 mile outdoor walking track, fully equipped fitness center with the same Cybex equipment that you are familiar with at the Whitehouse location.
The last day for YMCA member access in Whitehouse is Saturday, Aug. 26, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
