Considered the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day was set aside in 1894 to honor American labor and the contributions workers have made to the country.
Celebrated on the first Monday in September, this year Labor Day will be Monday, Sept. 4. Most government offices and school districts are closed for the holiday, including the city offices for Troup and Whitehouse, as well as the Troup and Whitehouse school districts.
The city offices and school districts will resume a normal schedule Tuesday, Sept. 5.
The Tri County Leader office also will be closed Monday, Sept. 4. Advertising and editorial deadlines will be moved to noon Friday, Sept. 1. The newspaper office will resume regular hours Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Leader office is open from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. each weekday. For more information, call (903) 839-2353.
