Losses dim playoff hopes for Lady Tigers softball


Troup rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning but fell short in a bid for a District 15-3A victory.

The Lady Tigers fell to 2-5 in the loop standings and will need to win out just to break even in district play. Troup was slated to play at Arp Tuesday, April 10, and will be at Winona at 6 p.m. Friday, April 13. The Lady Tigers (6-13) will conclude the regular season with a home game when they invite West Rusk at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17.

After falling behind 9-4 in the seventh frame, the Lady Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the period but fell short in the 9-8 loss.

“The amount of heart this team plays with each and every game is every coaches’ dream,” Weeks said. “I couldn’t be more proud or grateful to coach these young ladies.” 

Kori Minnix ripped a double and drove in a pair of runs and Emily Neel smacked a double and posted an RBI. Alyssa Hearon drove in two runs and Tayler Vance hit two sacrifice bunts and drove in a run.

In the circle, Vance walked four, struck out two and yielded nine hits, including a double. She had two earned runs.

Troup committed seven errors.

Hearon and Jayla Starks also were honored in a ceremony for seniors.

“Both girls have been members of the Lady Tigers softball program for four years,” said head coach Sam Weeks.

Harmony 11, Troup 6

After the Lady Tigers tallied two runs in the top of the fifth inning to knot the game at 5-5, the Lady Tigers grabbed the lead for the first time with a run in the top of the sixth stanza.

Down 6-5, Harmony regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth period and added three insurance runs in the seventh inning to preserve an 11-6 victory.

Minnix and Vance each belted a double and drove in a run, and Alondra Salinas slugged a sacrifice bunt and recorded a walk, an RBI and she scored once.

In seven innings of work, Vance yielded one strikeout and she walked one. She also yielded 15 hits, including two home runs, two doubles and 11 singles.

Troup JV 20, Arp 15

The Troup junior varsity defeated Arp 20-15 on the road last week. Liley Bozard hit an inside the park home run while sophomore Ashley Neel hit a grand slam over the centerfield fence.

Bozard also drove in three runs, while Neel drove in four runs and walked twice. Macie Hampton drove in three runs and walked four times and Valerie Guthrie hit a sacrifice bunt, drove in two runs and walked twice. Jalyce Dennis posted five RBIs.

Hampton was the starter and she yielded nine hits, four walks and three earned runs. She also struck out three. In an inning of relief, Brittany Pincock walked five and yielded two hits.
