Ladycats fall in Consolation finals


Whitehouse defeated Brook Hill and received a forfeit win over Winona in the annual Macy Chenevert Patriot Holiday Classic played at Bishop Gorman Haddad Gymnasium and Herrington Patriot Center at the UT Tyler campus.

In the Consolation final, Mount Pleasant defeated Whitehouse 62-42.

The Ladycats were scheduled to complete non-district competition when they hosted Chapel Hill Tuesday, Jan. 2. Whitehouse will open District 17-5A action at home when they host Nacogdoches at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5. The Ladycats will play at Jacksonville Tuesday, Jan. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Tigers eased to an 11-6 lead in the first quarter and did not let up in the second period. An 18-11 run put Mount Pleasant up 29-17 at the halftime break.

The Ladycats rallied for a 13-11 lead in the third quarter but the offense scored one basket in the fourth stanza and the defense yielded 22 points and the Lady Tigers roared to a 62-32 victory.

For the Ladycats, Ashley Buchinger was the only player in double figures with 11 points. Also scoring for Whitehouse were Hope Casel, 8; Makayla Moore, 6; India Shackelford, 4; Jazmin Ray, 2; and Riley Hester, 1.

Stacey Henderson hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 16 points, and Summer Baldwin scored 13 points, including one from three-point range. Kenya Bates also scored 13 points.

Bullard Brook Hill 33

The Ladycats started like a sprinter out of the blocks using a 17-3 run in the first frame to set the pace early in the game.

The Lady Guard rebounded with a 15-12 run in the second stanza, and that cut the Whitehouse lead to 29-18. Brook Hill never got any closer on the scoreboard. Whitehouse pocketed a 14-9 lead in the third frame and held off any hopes of a Brook Hill rally with an 11-6 edge in the fourth period.

Buchinger battled for top scoring honors and missed by a points with 16 points. Kaitlyn Rhea led the Lady Guard with 17 points.

Also for Whitehouse, Casel contributed 13, Moore added 11, Jazmin Ray pumped in six, Regan Zivney scored four, Riley Hester hit a three-pointer and finished with three and Shackelford scored two points.

Union Grove 54,

After a slow first quarter, Union Grove exploded for 22 points in the second frame to pull ahead for a huge first half lead.

Whitehouse was down a point, 6-5, when the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter. It was as if the sound of the buzzer sparked the Lady Lions, who used a 22-7 run in the frame to post a 28-12 halftime lead.

The Ladycats cut the lead by two with a 14-12 edge in the third quarter but Union Grove dominated fourth-quarter action to maintain the lead for the 54-33 win.

Buchinger was called on to pace the Ladycats with 14 points. Hester recorded eight, Zivney added three and Ray and Moore scored four apiece. Zivney and Hester each dropped in a pair from outside the arc.

Haley Breazeale and Summer Grubbs led the Lady Lions with 21 and 17 points, respectively. Breazeale rattled in four three-points buckets and Grubbs added two from long range.
