Ladycats eyeing playoffs

Whitehouse completely dominated Corsicana and Ennis in varsity District 17-5A softball competition. With the victories, the Ladycats improved to 5-1 in the district standings.

After a scheduled date at Jacksonville Tuesday, April 10, Whitehouse is slated to host Lindale at 6 p.m. Friday, April 13. The Ladycats will conclude the season with their final home game with Nacogdoches at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, and with a contest at Ennis at 6 p.m. Friday, April 20.

Whitehouse 14, Corsicana 3

Mahayla Mitchell belted a two-run homer in the first inning and that set the pace for the Whitehouse offense that collected nine hits, including a fourth-inning four-bagger by Makala Moore.

Whitehouse jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame and after the Lady Tigers scored one run in each of the second and third stanzas, the Ladycats plated three more to push the lead to 6-2. Behind Moore’s home run in the fourth frame, Whitehouse added four more runs and a four-run fifth inning concluded the game on the mercy rule.

Mitchell was in the circle and she allowed three walks and five hits, including a pair of home runs and two doubles. She also struck out nine batters. Both homers were solo shots.

In addition to her home run, Moore also slugged a double, Mitchell finished with a single to go along with her homer and Kenzie Wright ripped a trio of singles. Jadyn Gunn and Rylee Cortez each smacked a double.

For Whitehouse, batters struck out only once and the Ladycats reached base seven times via a walk. The Ladycats had one error. Corsicana did not commit an error.

Whitehouse 10, Ennis 1

Following two scoreless innings to start the district game with Ennis, the Ladycats gave up a run to the Lady Lions in the third stanza. Whitehouse was able to knot the game at 1-1 after four innings.

Jocelyn Downs, Regan Zivney and Wright all reached base on Ennis errors. Maddie Wright and Moore followed with singles and the end result was a three-run frame and a 4-1 Whitehouse lead.

Mitchell and the Whitehouse defense allowed only one base runner in the final four innings, a batter who walked but did not advance past first base.

For added insurance, the Ladycats pushed six runs across the plate in the sixth inning to end the game with a 10-1 victory.

Mitchell struck out seven, she gave up three walks and she allowed three hits, all singles.

For Ennis, Monica Monreal struck out eight, and she yielded three walks and seven hits.

Moore led the offense with a trio of singles and Wright finished with two singles. Moore and Zivney each had two stolen bases.

The Lady Lions were guilty of five errors and the Ladycats did not commit an error.
