Momentum is necessary for a long run in the playoffs and Troup is on the right path after a win over Sabine last week.
The Lady Tigers had an open date Friday, Feb. 2, and played Sabine Tuesday, Jan. 30 for their only District 15-3A contest. The 45-29 victory gave Troup an advantage over Sabine for the seeding in the playoffs. The Lady Tigers improved to 8-3 in the loop standings (19-8 for the season), while the Lady Cardinals fell to 7-3 (20-9 for the season). Troup closed the regular season with the final home game versus West Rusk Tuesday, Feb. 6. If Troup defeated the Lady Raiders, the Lady Tigers will have reached the 20-win plateau for the regular season.
Troup 45, Sabine 29
In the first game between these two playoff-bound teams in early January, Sabine controlled the action for the first three quarters and held a 10-point lead going into the final quarter. Troup had to rally in the final minutes to win that game.
In last week’s contest with the Lady Cardinals, Troup got off to a much better start. The Lady Tigers controlled the flow of the game from the start and ended with a 9-5 edge after one period. Following an 11-7 run in the second frame, the Lady Tigers took a 20-12 lead into the halftime break.
The Lady Cardinals were able to keep up with Troup in the third quarter but the Lady Tigers still managed an 11-9 edge on the scoreboard to take a 31-21 lead into the final stanza. Troup did not allow Sabine to rally and kept up the pressure to dominate the fourth quarter and gain the 45-29 victory.
Junior Kori Minnix paced the offense with 13 points, and she recorded three rebounds and three assists. Jayla Starks grabbed 10 rebounds and added 8 points and three assists to the team totals, and Ty Moon contributed eight points, four rebounds and two assists. Also for Troup, Asia Parker finished with six points, five boards and three assists, Renee Dennis scored six points and collected a trio of rebounds, Emily Neel posted two points and grabbed six rebounds and Alyssa Hearon scored two points and grabbed four rebounds.
Genesis Willett led Sabine with 10 points, Miranda Cook scored seven points, Sarah Davis scored four, Jordin Broadway added two points and Kristen Stuart and Natalie Morgan scored three points apiece.
