Lady Tigers begin district play with victory

It’s always important to start district competition with a win because the momentum can carry a team into the playoffs.

Troup accomplished that goal with a straight-set win over Gladewater to begin District 16-3A action last week. The Lady Tigers were slated to play at Harmony Tuesday, Sept. 11, and will travel to Winona for a match at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. Troup will host Arp at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18.

With victory over Gladewater, Troup improved to 1-0 in the loop standings and 17-7 for the season.

Troup dominated the first two sets of the match, including a 25-8 win in the first game and a repeat of 25-8 in the second game. The Lady Bears were unable to match the talent of the Lady Tigers and Troup took the third game 25-14 to capture the match victory.

Of the team’s 29 kills, Kori Minnix smashed 13; Savanna Cox belted seven; Sam Eastman and Alyssa Adamic each ripped three; Maryssa Gilliam hit two and Josie Martin recorded one kill.

Natalie Davenport led the team with three ace serves and 27 assists and, along with Tiffany Lacy, paced the squad with five digs. Cox recorded four digs, Minnix had two and Adamic, Avery Thibodeaux and Gilliam each had one.

Minnix and Lacy also posted two aces apiece.

In their final pre-district tune-up, the Lady Tigers played at Bullard. The Lady Panthers fought for a 25-21 win in the first game of the match and Bullard outlasted Troup for a 25-21 victory in the second game. The Lady Tigers were unable to gain any momentum in the third game and Bullard prevailed 25-17 to win the match.

Davenport recorded 24 assists, nine digs, two kills and an ace, while Lacy posted 10 digs, an assist and an ace. Minnix finished with nine kills, two aces, seven digs and she blocked a shot, and Cox pounded a dozen kills and hit an ace. Adamic recorded three kills and four digs.
