Kathy Hettenbach was awarded “Rookie Ambassador” by the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Although 2017 was her first year to serve as Ambassador for the Smith County Area Go Texan organization, Kathy has been involved as a volunteer and leader for many years.
She and her husband, Gary, an HLSR Director, moved to Troup several years ago and brought with them their passion for supporting and encouraging Texas students with scholarships. Prior to 2014, Smith County kids were not eligible to receive scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo because we did not have a “Go Texan” organization. That changed when the Hettenbachs moved here.
Preston Lindsey, also from Troup, was the first Smith County Ambassador and served 2014 through 2016. He continues to serve in a leadership role. Smith County has been one of the most successful counties in the state. Obviously, that success has continued for 2017 with Kathy.
Smith County Area Go Texan was started 5 years ago. We raise money for scholarships for Smith County Students. Now that we have a Go Texan organization in Smith County, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, also, gives scholarships to Smith County students……and they’re big.
“The students do not have to be in FFA to receive a scholarship.”
In case you don’t know, the HLSR gives millions of dollars in scholarships to Texas students. Until 5 years ago, Smith County students were not eligible to receive this money because we did not have a “Go Texan” organization. Now, you know the good news.
In 2017, our Smith County Go Texan group gave eight $5,000 scholarships to Smith County students. Houston gave two $20,000 scholarships to Smith County students. (Now they are $22,000.) They can go back their junior and senior years and apply for an additional $16,000.
We need more applications from high school seniors. They can be submitted on line. The best time is during the Christmas holidays, January & February. Talk with your school counselors.
Our Smith County Area Go Texan fundraiser this year is Saturday, July 21, at Harvey Hall. Please join us. Tell your friends. Contact us for tickets. The money goes for scholarships for Smith County students. Plus, this makes our Smith County students eligible for the Houston scholarships.
