Gala to benefit scholarship funds for local students

The fifth annual gala of the Smith County Area Go Texan is scheduled for Saturday, July 21, at the Harvey Hall Center, 2000 West Front Street. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is the major fund-raising event of the organization.

This year’s gala will feature both silent and live auctions as well as live music from the Frank Ray Band and an opportunity to hit the dance floor, all while helping finance scholarships for local students. The meal for the event is being catered by 1836 Texas Kitchen.

Cost for tickets is $100 each and includes a meal, drinks and gift bag. To sponsor the event, one can purchase a table for 10 at $1,000. Sponsors will be featured in a video during the gala and will also be permitted to display a banner, according to Chuck Osborn, a committee member of SCAGT.

Osborn reports the committee expects approximately 500 people. Those wishing to be in attendance may consider purchasing tickets early.

The Smith County Area Go Texan committee was formed in 2014 and has presented 40 recipients with a total of $277,000 in scholarships.

This year, a $20,000 scholarship was presented to Shayna Ballin of Whitehouse who will be attending Texas A&M. Eight other students each received $5,000 scholarships including Katherine Dulany, Brook Hill; Courney Eeds, Whitehouse; Katryn Kuzakowski, Bullard; Natalie Lim, Grace; Wade Linsott, Whitehouse; Katherine McLeod, Whitehouse; Connor White, Bullard, and John Womack, Troup.

Dulany will be attending Baylor University; Lim will be attending University of Texas, Austin, and Katherine McLeod is to study at Southern Methodist University. The remainder of the scholarship recipients will attend Texas A&M.

Smith County Area Go Texan is an all volunteer organization which is associated with and serves to promote the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Local committee members do not chose scholarship recipients.

Current committee members include Dr. John Alexander, Duane Barber, Dr. John Camp, Kara Camp, Susan Davis, Pam Frederick, Wade Frederick, Hollie Gambino, Gary Hettenbach, Kathy Hettenbach, Ken Langley, Betty Odom, Sherri Reed, John Tucker and Wanda Tucker. This is primarily a fundraising committee and there openings for those willing to commit to the time and effort necessary.
