West Rusk was undefeated and had only allowed 31 points all season. The Raiders seemed to be a lock for the District 9-3A, Division II title before last week’s action with Elysian Fields.
In the words of a famous college coach, “Not so fast my friend.”
Not only did the Yellow Jackets upset West Rusk, they scored 32 points, more than the Raiders had allowed for the season. When the dust settled, Elysian Fields edged West Rusk 32-31.
That outcome tossed the lead in the district standings into a three-way tie with Elysian Fields, West Rusk and Waskom. All three are 4-1, which includes a 30-27 victory by Waskom over Elysian Fields in October.
Elysian Fields will play at Troup at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10. West Rusk will host Beckville and Waskom will travel to Harleton.
The playoff teams are determined but the seeding may change after Friday’s action. West Rusk, Waskom and Elysian Fields clinched the top three seeds regardless of what happens Friday night. Arp defeated Harleton 31-14 last week to clinch fourth seed and a playoff spot.
Waskom defeated Troup 42-6 to remain atop the loop standings. Troup fell to 1-4 in district action, which is tied with Harleton and Beckville.
Arp will have a bye this week.
District 9-3A teams will face teams from District 10-3A in the first round of the State playoffs next week. Newton (8-0) leads the district standings at 4-0, followed by Garrison (5-4, 3-1), Hemphill (5-4, 2-2), Corrigan-Camden (4-4, 2-2), Crockett (2-7, 1-3) and Frankston (1-8, 0-4).
