Drivers be aware of school zones as students return to class

It is that time of year when East Texans are still experiencing summer weather, but local school districts are beginning fall semesters.

As a result of voter approval of a nearly $95 million bond in November 2016, Whitehouse ISD now boasts two new school campuses, Brown Elementary at 14600 CR 2191 or Oscar Burkett Road, and Whitehouse Junior High at 101 Bain Place.

Due to the new location of both campuses, the school zone on Highway 110 just north of F.M. 346 has been removed. The school zone on Highway 110 at Cain Elementary will remain in place.

Caution lights for a new school zone has been installed on F.M. 346 from just west of Willingham Road to Shahan Ranch Boulevard. The speed limit will be 35 mph through the school zone.

Whitehouse Police Chief Ed Morris cautions drivers, when school is in session, to always be aware of school zones. He also recommends motorists remember once they have dropped off their own children, there are other students being dropped off or even walking to school and to remain alert.
