District 17-5A splits action in season opening games

Whitehouse, Jacksonville and Corsicana got a head start in the District 17-5A standings with victories to open the 2017 gridiron season.

Whitehouse defeated Hallsville 27-10, Jacksonville topped Pine Tree 21-12, and Corsicana had no problems with Red Oak posting a 41-0 shutout to start the year.

Ennis suffered a narrow 29-28 loss to South Oak Cliff, Lindale was upended by Kaufman 19-14, and Kilgore dominated Nacogdoches 35-21.

All six teams will be in action this week, including Whitehouse, which will play in the Rose City Classic. The Wildcats will play Chapel Hill at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Rose Stadium in Tyler. Whitehouse is the designated visiting team.

Corsicana will play at Robert E. Lee and Jacksonville is on the road at Palestine. Ennis will face Class-6A John Tyler on the road, Lindale will host Forney and Nacogdoches will renew its rivalry with Lufkin at Lufkin.

District action will begin Oct. 13.
