Community Activities

Cherokee County Genealogical Society

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Genealogical Society will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at the First United Methodist Church, 1031 SE Loop 456, in Jacksonville. The meeting will be followed by light “pot luck” refreshments provided by CCGS members. Edom Art Festival

The Edom Art Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 15. Admission is free. Edom is located halfway between Dallas and Shreveport, 20 miles east of Canton, 10 miles south of Interstate 20 and 15 miles west of Tyler. Republic Services in Whitehouse picks up recycling on Wednesday. Recyclable items include paper, newspaper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum cans and tin cans. 

Troup has a self-service recycling receptacle. The Allied Waste Recycling bin is located at the corner of W. Bradford and N. Georgia.

Jam session and sing along

Jam session and sing along runs from 1:30 to 4 p.m. each Friday. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate. Acoustic instruments only. Music includes Country, Bluegrass and Gospel. TASCA members are free. Guests are $1 each. TASCA is located at 10495 CR 2167 (Jim Russell Rd), in Whitehouse. 

American Legion weekly events

American Legion in Troup at 301 Magnolia has pool tournaments beginning at 7 p.m. each Wednesday night. 

Senior Activities

The Tyler Area Senor Citizens Association schedule includes the following events:

Thursday, Oct. 5: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., TASCA Activity Center. Line dance, 9-11 a.m.; Pinochle, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; Mah Jongg, 12:30-4:00 p.m.; Hand & foot, 12:30-4:00 p.m.; 42 Group (straight), 12:30–4 p. m.; Beginner Bridge, 1-3 p.m.; Open to the public. 

Friday, Oct. 6: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., TASCA Activity Center. Fitness exercise with Certified Instructor for Older Adults, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.; coffee/social group, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.; Practice Bridge, 12:30 - 4:00 p.m.; Sing-along/Jamming, 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. Open to the public.

Saturday, Oct. 7: 6:30-9:30, TASCA Event Center. Country Western dance featuring Caddo Creek, 7-9:30 p.m.; Admission is $6 for everyone. Snacks will be provided.

Monday, Oct. 9: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., TASCA Activity Center. Coffee/Social Group, 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.; 42 group, 12–4 p.m.; Mah Jongg, 1–4 p.m.; Beginner Bridge, 1-3 p.m. Open to the public.
