Many people, myself included, had a three-day weekend due to the Memorial Day holiday. Special services were held in many churches, various community events took place and some folks simply spent time with family and friends.
Though I did not attend any community-wide events this past weekend to mark the occasion, the church I attended held a special song service in gratitude for military service personal who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Prayers were also offered asking God’s protection on those currently serving and leaders in our government. Members of the congregation who have served in the military were also recognized.
Monday, we had company. Two couples joined us for hamburgers with all the fixings, including homemade guacamole prepared by my husband. We enjoyed the time and fellowship with friends.
Memorial Day seems to mark the beginning of grilling season and summertime for so many. I know my husband made use of our grill and the weather was warm.
I also know and took time to reflect on the fact that the many freedoms we enjoy, and often take for granted, have only been secured by those willing to fight and die on our behalf.
Since Lee Greenwood lyrics to “God Bless the USA,” reflect my own feelings, I’ll close with his chorus.
“I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I’m free
And I won’t forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I’d gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.”
