Beginning next week, the Bullard Banner News and the Tri County Leader newspapers, owned by Bluebonnet Publishing, LLC., will be merged into a single publication.
“An old newspaper guy once said, ‘a newspaper’s first responsibility to its readers is to stay in business,’” said Bill Woodall, publisher. “For that to happen, we need the efficiencies that come from a single press run, from making all our deliveries on one day. Rather than close one or both of the papers, we’ve decided to consolidate.”
As the new Tri County Leader newspaper, the publication will continue to cover the communities of Bullard, Troup, Whitehouse, Flint, and Arp.
Leading the newsroom will be Michelle Dillon, currently editor of the Tri County Leader, who will be editor of the merged publication.
Also on staff for Tri County Leader will be Micah McCartney, who has covered Bullard so completely for us, will continue to cover the Bullard and Flint communities; Don Treul, who will continue to cover sports in Whitehouse and Troup; and Carolyn Hadley, who has handled advertising for the print and digital news products for the past 10 months
“Revenue has not kept up with increasing costs,” said Woodall. “We survived the increased cost of health care. Then we looked up and the government imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canadian newsprint -- which allowed domestic paper companies to raise their prices 23 percent without worrying about Canadian competition. On top of that, a tariff on imported aluminum is raising the price of printing plates.”
For the new publication, editorial submissions will have deadline of 12 p.m. on Mondays, while classified advertisement deadline will be 10 a.m. Mondays and retail advertisement deadline will be 12 p.m. Mondays.
The Whitehouse news line phone number will stay the same at (903) 839-2353 and the Bullard news line will remain at (903) 894-9306.
