Texas bowhunters will come “nocking” starting Saturday, Sept. 30, as deer hunting’s early season, limited to archery equipment only, opens statewide. Hunting prospects are expected to be good across the state, according to wildlife biologists with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). While the archery-only season kicks off this weekend, the general gun season opener is still more than a month away on Nov. 4. A special youth-only weekend season is set for Oct. 28-29. The general season runs through Jan. 7, in North Texas and Jan. 21, in South Texas. more

When playing the number one team in the State polls, miscues have to be kept at a minimum and performance has to be crisp. Despite a strong first half, Whitehouse suffered five turnovers which contributed to a 42-20 loss to top-ranked Carthage last week. The Bulldogs, the defending Class-4A, Division I State Champions, played to their potential. more
Ouch! District 17-5A teams lost five of six outings on the gridiron last week. The lone exception to the losses was the one-point, 15-14 victory by Jacksonville over Hallsville. more
The Troup offense was impressive. Quarterback Wesley Ross threw for 222 yards and a pair of touchdowns, wide receiver Tristan Clark caught two of those receptions for 122 yards and two scores, and Ramiro Martinez toted the ball 11 times for 56 yards. As impressive as the offense was, the Troup defense was even more so. The Tigers allowed only 89 yards on the ground, and the Elkhart aerial assault was even more anemic totaling a listless 14 yards. more
With one game remaining on the slate before the District 9-3A, Division II teams begin loop competition, Beckville and West Rusk remain the only unbeaten teams. Troup, however, improved to 2-1 and Elysian Fields lost for the first time to drop to 2-1 for the season. The Troup Tigers defeated Elkhart 28-7, Beckville overwhelmed Quitman 62-14, and West Rusk moved to 2-0 after a 53-8 victory over Sabine. Arp picked up its first win of the season with a 28-20 victory over Alto, and Waskom moved into the win column with a 49-42 thriller over Grace Community. more
The 7th Annual “Tee Off for Toys” Golf Tournament will be Monday, Sept. 25, at Hideaway Lake Golf Course. Hosted by the Tyler Professional Firefighters Association, the four-player scramble benefits The Salvation Army’s annual Angel Tree program. Each player is also asked to bring an unwrapped toy ($10 and up value) with them on the tournament day more
15-3A opener over Harmony, the Lady Tigers continued their quest for a district title with a victory over Sabine last week. With the win, Troup improved to 2-0 in loop play and 13-10 for the season. Troup played Winona late last week but information on the match was not available. The Lady Tigers hosted Cumberland Tuesday, Sept. 19, and will play East Texas Christian in a non-district tilt Friday, Sept. 22. The first serve is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Troup will resume district play at Arp Tuesday, Sept. 26. more
Don Graham was the first inductee into the new Troup High School Hall of Honor initiated Friday, Sept. 15, at the Homecoming game. Graham, 66, began competing in roping events and steer riding at junior rodeos at age 11. In 1968, he placed in three R.C.A. rodeos and became a member of the Texas A&M Rodeo Team in 1972 and 1973.
