Troup made a mark in the District 15-3A tennis tournament Thursday, April 5. The Tigers won the team title and the Lady Tigers placed third. Collin Kubecka won the singles title and the duo of Shane Thomas and Logan Stone won the doubles championship. more
Whitehouse dominated the District 17-5A track and field meet Wednesday, April 4. In the freshman boys division, Whitehouse tallied 208 points for first place and the junior varsity team collected 112 points for third place. Bladimir Tarango was first in two events. He won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:01.17. He also led a one-two Whitehouse sweep in the 800 run with the winning time of 2:09.99. Zach Cox was next across the finish line with a time of 2:14.43. more
Whitehouse breezed through a two-game series with Jacksonville and added a non-district victory over Lufkin in varsity diamond action last week. The Wildcats, who improved to 16-4 for the season and 3-1 in District 17-5A competition, were slated to host Nacogdoches Tuesday, April 10, and are scheduled to play at Nacogdoches Friday, April 13. The District 17-5A varsity track and field meet began Wednesday, April 11, and will continue Thursday, April 12, at Howard Cook Field in Jacksonville. The field events, including shot put, discus, pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump, as well as the running prelims were scheduled for Wednesday, April 11. more
Sarah Teves captured second place in singles competition at the District 17-5A tennis tournament Wednesday and Thursday, April 4 and 5, at Corsicana. Teves won in a play-back match that lasted almost three hours.  more
Troup rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning but fell short in a bid for a District 15-3A victory. The Lady Tigers fell to 2-5 in the loop standings and will need to win out just to break even in district play. Troup was slated to play at Arp Tuesday, April 10, and will be at Winona at 6 p.m. Friday, April 13. The Lady Tigers (6-13) will conclude the regular season with a home game when they invite West Rusk at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17. more
Whitehouse completely dominated Corsicana and Ennis in varsity District 17-5A softball competition. With the victories, the Ladycats improved to 5-1 in the district standings. After a scheduled date at Jacksonville Tuesday, April 10, Whitehouse is slated to host Lindale at 6 p.m. Friday, April 13. The Ladycats will conclude the season with their final home game with Nacogdoches at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, and with a contest at Ennis at 6 p.m. Friday, April 20. more
Whitehouse powerlifter Macy Smith signed a letter of intent to participate in the sport at UT Austin during a ceremony Friday, April 6, in The Arena at Whitehouse High School. Smith finished 14th in the 123-pound class at the Texas High School State Powerlifting meet at Waco in March. She had lifts of 250 pounds in the squat, 150 pounds in the bench press and 300 pounds in the deadlift for a total of 700 pounds. more
Hilltop Country Club in Troup hosted the weekly Senior Scramble Tuesday, April 3. At first place with a score of minus -16, was the team of John Covington, Bill Luce, Andy Jarvis, Mac Norman and Joe Gatzka. The team of Mike Cearley, Tracy Ainsworth, Gil Weston, Ray Griffith and Bill Kyle placed second at munus-12. In the closest-to-the-pin contest, Tracy Ainsworth won the sixth green (119¾ inches), and Jimmy Baughman won the 12th green (18½ inches). more
In early March, a Smith County game warden received a call from a Virginia game warden concerning some Texas deer confiscated from a taxidermist in Virginia who was operating without a license. There were three sets of antlers, and two of the tags came back to Smith County. The third buck, a 10-point, had a name but no tag. more
