Whitehouse powerlifter Macy Smith signed a letter of intent to participate in the sport at UT Austin during a ceremony Friday, April 6, in The Arena at Whitehouse High School. Smith finished 14th in the 123-pound class at the Texas High School State Powerlifting meet at Waco in March. She had lifts of 250 pounds in the squat, 150 pounds in the bench press and 300 pounds in the deadlift for a total of 700 pounds. more
Hilltop Country Club in Troup hosted the weekly Senior Scramble Tuesday, April 3. At first place with a score of minus -16, was the team of John Covington, Bill Luce, Andy Jarvis, Mac Norman and Joe Gatzka. The team of Mike Cearley, Tracy Ainsworth, Gil Weston, Ray Griffith and Bill Kyle placed second at munus-12. In the closest-to-the-pin contest, Tracy Ainsworth won the sixth green (119¾ inches), and Jimmy Baughman won the 12th green (18½ inches). more
In early March, a Smith County game warden received a call from a Virginia game warden concerning some Texas deer confiscated from a taxidermist in Virginia who was operating without a license. There were three sets of antlers, and two of the tags came back to Smith County. The third buck, a 10-point, had a name but no tag. more
Following the March tournament at Lake Palestine, the Troup team of Rowdy Howell and Walker Adams and the Whitehouse teams of Trenton Bookman and Elijah Focht and of Jason Wise and Paul Wood are among the top ten teams vying for the Texas High School Bass Association Angler of the Year award. more
Whitehouse added a bi-district championship to the district title the team owns after the Ladycats defeated A&M Consolidated in playoff competition Thursday, March 29. The Ladycats (10-5-1) were slated to play Tomball Memorial (16-4-2) Monday, April 2, at Abe Field in Lufkin in area competition. Tomball edged Whitehouse 2-0 to end the season for the Ladycats. more
It was the championship day for Whitehouse at the District 17-5A golf tournament played at Pine Dunes Golf Course in Frankston last week. Walker LaRue and Cason Hood led the Wildcats, while Meghan Adams set the pace for the Ladycats. The Wildcats recorded a team score of 621 to win the district title. Lindale carded a distant 668 for second place, edging out Corsicana, which posted a 669 for third place. It was a three-team race for the championship for the Ladycats, who fired a 824 for first place. Lindale carded an 848 for second place and third place honors went to Corsicana at 954. more
Following a tough loss to Jacksonville in District 17-5A softball competition earlier in the month, Whitehouse rallied to defeat Lindale and overwhelmed Nacogdoches last week. With the victories, the Ladycats improved to 3-1 in the loop standings, and they were scheduled to host Ennis Tuesday, April 3 (storms were predicted). Whitehouse will host Corsicana Friday, April 6, to start the second run through the district schedule. The first pitch is slated for 6 p.m. The Ladycats also will play at Jacksonville at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10. more
Troup High School hosted its annual Shuttlesworth Relays Thursday, March 29, with 13 schools participating. “We had a good showing from several local schools,” said track coach Lauren Rodgers. Rodgers said several athletes set personal records or had season best marks. more
Troup was ahead 11-0 when the Tigers plated six more runs in the fifth inning in a victory over West Rusk Friday, March 30. With the win, the Tigers improved to 5-1 and completed the first round of District 15-3A competition. Troup was off Tuesday, April 3, and will host Sabine at 7 p.m. Friday, April 6. The Tigers also will host Cumberland Tuesday, April 10. The first pitch is slated for 7 p.m. more
Of the three District 15-3A softball losses for Troup, two were by a single run, including the 5-4 loss to West Rusk Friday, March 30. After last week’s results, the Lady Tigers are 6-11 for the season and 2-3 in the loop standings. Troup was scheduled to play at Harmony Tuesday, April 3, and will host Sabine at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 6. The Lady Tigers also will play at Arp at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10. more
