Elysian Fields was primed to share the District 9-3A, Division II title with West Rusk and Waskom. Troup had other plans. The Yellow Jackets, once ranked among the top 20 teams in Class-3A in the state, expected to roll over the Tigers in the regular season finale last week. Troup upset Elysian Fields 35-32 to eliminate the Jackets from the district title race. more
Whitehouse had already secured a spot in the State football playoffs, but the Wildcats needed to put their stamp on the third seed from the district. To accomplish that, head coach Adam Cook and his squad had to defeat Lindale in the regular season finale at home last week. The Wildcats scored first, held a 20-8 lead going into the fourth quarter, but had to rally late to capture a 27-23 victory over the Eagles. As a result, Whitehouse finished third in the District 16-5A standings and will play A&M Consolidated (8-2, 4-2) in the bi-district or first round of the playoffs. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium at Sam Houston State University. more
It wasn’t really much of a cat fight. The Ennis Lions muzzled the Corsicana Tigers 46-14 in a game to decide the District 16-5A title last week. Both teams were unbeaten in loop competition going into the game. Ennis will advance into the State playoffs as the top seed in the district and, despite the loss, Corsicana will advance as the second seed. Whitehouse wrapped up the third seed with a 27-23 victory over Lindale, which knocked the Eagles from playoff contention. Jacksonville pounded Nacogdoches 56-33 and the Indians will advance as the fourth seed. more
Troup head coach David Minnix and the Lady Tigers will be a force to reckon with during the 2017-2018 basketball season. That message was clear in the opening games with Whitehouse and Bullard Brook Hill. Troup caged the Ladycats 60-42 and the Lady Tigers overwhelmed the Guard 43-9. more
The Troup Junior Varsity Classic is scheduled Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 16-18. Troup invited Cumberland Academy, Cross Roads, Grand Saline and Latexo to the event. The first game will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, and all game will be played in the high school gymnasium. Grand Saline and Latexo will kick off the tournament. more
The recipe is easy. Take five golfers, add scores from 74 to 85 and mix thoroughly. Simmer for about two hours and ice with a team title. Whitehouse used that recipe to capture the Lindale Invitational team championship at Garden Valley Golf Course last week. Senior Walker LaRue tied for top medalist with a 74 for the 18-hole match played in cold, windy conditions. more
It’s a numbers thing. Corsicana defeated Whitehouse 27-10 last week but the Wildcats still clinched a spot in the playoffs. Whitehouse fell to 2-2 in the District 17-5A standings, but Jacksonville upset Lindale 25-15 and both stand at 1-3 in the standings. The Wildcats will advance because of the scoring difference in their 24-7 win over Jacksonville earlier in the schedule. The Tigers, meanwhile, are set up for a winner-take-all, district title match with Ennis Friday, Nov. 10. Both are 4-0 and the winner will claim the championship. more
