Three Troup players highlighted the All-District 15-3A volleyball roster and head coach Arden Johnson was named Coach of the Year. Natalie Davenport was named Setter of the Year and Kori Minnix was listed as Hitter of the Year. Both are juniors. Sophomore Asia Parker was named Blocker of the Year. Jansen Reid received First Team accolades and two Troup players were named to the Second Team, including Savanna Cox and Alex Flora. Cheyenne Henson, Jayla Starks and Alyssa Flora received Honorable Mention. Also named to the Academic All-District roster were Minnix, Davenport, Reid, Alex Flora, Alyssa Flora, Cox, Starks and Henson. Minnix and Davenport also were named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Alternate Team, while Reid was named to the Texas Association of Volleyball Coaches All-Star North Team. Also named to the TGCA Academic All-State were Alex Collins, Henson and Reid, while Minnix and Davenport were named to the TAVC All-State roster. Payton Kennedy and Javier Neal sparked a second-quarter rally that put Whitehouse firmly ahead after a close first quarter in a game at Ennis Friday, Jan. 12. The Wildcats were able to hold on to the lead and post a 73-55 victory over the Lions to open District 17-5A competition. more
Troup concluded the first run through the District 15-3A hoops schedule with a win over West Rusk. The Lady Tigers finished 5-1 and they improved to 15-6 for the season. They began the second march through the district schedule at Arp Tuesday, Jan. 16, and they will try to avenge their only loop loss when they host Winona at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19. Troup also will play at Harmony Tuesday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. more
Five Troup players scored in double figures and the Tigers rolled to an 80-41 victory over West Rusk in District 15-3A competition Friday, Jan. 12. The game featured 15 three-point baskets, including three apiece by Weslee Ross, Jared Jackson and Grayson Griggs. Jones Ard, by the way, dropped in a pair of three-pointers. more
The Whitehouse offense was held in check in back-to-back District 17-5A contests last week. Ennis and Jacksonville had little trouble in defeating the Ladycats, who fell to 0-3 in the loop standings. Whitehouse was slated to host Lindale Tuesday, Jan. 16, and will host Corsicana at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19. The Ladycats will play at Nacogdoches at 7:30 p.m. more

In Self Defense Some hunters believe commercial scent attractants to be effective at luring in white-tailed deer, particularly during the rut. A Smith County man argued recently that these products work too well, and caused him to have to shoot two undersized bucks in self-defense. After a logging crew reported finding two buck heads on top of a shed hidden in the woods, a Smith County game warden began asking around. more
The University Interscholastic League released the conference cutoff numbers and preliminary enrollment figures for the 2018-2020 reclassification and realignment. The 2018-20 alignments will be released Thursday, Feb. 1, for football and basketball. District alignments for other activities will be released in the order of their seasons. The non-district schedule for Whitehouse ended Monday, Jan. 8, when the Wildcats hosted Hudson. Whitehouse will begin District 17-5A competition at Ennis Friday, Jan. 12. The Wildcats will host Lindale Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Corsicana Friday, Jan. 19. With a victory over Hudson Monday, Jan. 8, Whitehouse is 15-6 for the season. The record includes a loss to Pittsburg and a double-overtime victory over Lufkin last week. more
