SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) honored Carly Dyess of Sam Houston State University as a Major of the Year during the organization’s 133rd National Convention & Expo, in Nashville in March. The award celebrated outstanding undergraduate students in the health, physical education, recreation and dance professions who are nominated by a faculty advisor or professor. more

Three places on the Troup ISD Board of Trustees will be open for election, Saturday, May 5. Five candidates have filed including Joe Morris and Burnel “Sonny” Selden who are vying for the remaining two-year term in Place 1, Lee Morris who is challenging Gene W. Whitsell for Place 5 and running unopposed is John Whitsell for Place 4. Each of the candidates was asked to respond to a series of questions. This, the first of a two-part report, is an introduction to the candidates who were asked to tell about themselves and why they have chosen to run for a seat on the school board. No response was received from John Whitsell, nor was a picture submitted by Burnel Seldon. more
The hiring of Coach Marcus Gold as the new head football coach highlighted the Monday, April 9, meeting of the Whitehouse ISD Board of Trustees. Gold, who has served as defensive coordinator, was approved to replace Adam Cook who had previously been promoted to the position of athletic director. Several students and staff were recognized during the meeting. Student council member Morganne Tomlinson and her sponsor Randi Shaw were noted for their coordination of the “Shattered Dream” event which simulated a drunk-driving wreck and involved many local first responders. Meagan Killian was celebrated for her award winning artwork being displayed in the Texas Capital building and Kamryn Hightower was acknowledged as FFA talent show winner. more
Jeff McCormack, a senior at Troup High School, gave a check to the City of Troup on behalf of the National Honor Society. The NHS had held a movie night benefiting the Troup Police Department and the $366 total was presented at the Monday, April 16, city council meeting. McCormack previously hosted a spaghetti dinner benefiting the Troup PD K9 program in March 2017, raising $1,700. more
Troup Independent School District trustees are taking steps to improve security at school campuses. The position of a full-time school resource officer (SRO) for the elementary campus was approved at the Monday, April 9, meeting of the school board. Other measures are also being considered. more
He changed the defensive strategy for the Whitehouse football program for the past two seasons and now he will have the opportunity to put his stamp on “everything Whitehouse football.” At the monthly board meeting Monday, April 9, the Whitehouse Independent School District Board of Trustees selected Marcus Gold as the new head football coach for the Wildcats. more
Whitehouse ISD Education Foundation president Jim Nipp, along with other members of the foundation and school officials, surprised two teachers on Tuesday, April 3, with awards for Innovator of the Year. “Both of the Innovator of the Year award winners found a way to maximize the impact of their creative ideas,” Nipp stated. more
