Whitehouse Independent School District is facing many changes for the 2018-2019 school year, including a new Brown Elementary and a new junior high. A nearly $95 million bond was passed in November 2016 approving the two separate propositions which allowed for the construction of two new schools, several other additions and improvements, upgrades to areas of the existing stadium as well as construction of an indoor multi-purpose facility on the high school campus. more

From a young child playing school to her time in college, Laurie Blain always knew she wanted to be a teacher. With 21 years experience in education, 10 of those in administration, Blain has been hired to serve as principal at Cain Elementary. Originally from Houston, Blain has lived in Tyler over five years. She was employed last year as the assistant principal of Andy Woods Elementary in Tyler after serving as assistant principal at Mamie Griffin Elementary, also in Tyler, from 2013-2017. more
Wade Linscott, a 2018 graduate of Whitehouse High School and son of Steven and Heather Linscott, will be inducted into the Naval Academy Class of 2022 Thursday, June 28, and will begin six challenging weeks of basic midshipman training as part of Plebe Summer. Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected each year for the Academy’s “plebe” or freshman class, and each student is required to participate in Plebe Summer. Last year the Naval Academy received over 16,000 applications for the Class of 2021. more

The fifth annual gala of the Smith County Area Go Texan is scheduled for Saturday, July 21, at the Harvey Hall Center, 2000 West Front Street. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is the major fund-raising event of the organization. This year’s gala will feature both silent and live auctions as well as live music from the Frank Ray Band and an opportunity to hit the dance floor, all while helping finance scholarships for local students. The meal for the event is being catered by 1836 Texas Kitchen. more
