From a young child playing school to her time in college, Laurie Blain always knew she wanted to be a teacher. With 21 years experience in education, 10 of those in administration, Blain has been hired to serve as principal at Cain Elementary. Originally from Houston, Blain has lived in Tyler over five years. She was employed last year as the assistant principal of Andy Woods Elementary in Tyler after serving as assistant principal at Mamie Griffin Elementary, also in Tyler, from 2013-2017. more
Wade Linscott, a 2018 graduate of Whitehouse High School and son of Steven and Heather Linscott, will be inducted into the Naval Academy Class of 2022 Thursday, June 28, and will begin six challenging weeks of basic midshipman training as part of Plebe Summer. Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected each year for the Academy’s “plebe” or freshman class, and each student is required to participate in Plebe Summer. Last year the Naval Academy received over 16,000 applications for the Class of 2021. more

The fifth annual gala of the Smith County Area Go Texan is scheduled for Saturday, July 21, at the Harvey Hall Center, 2000 West Front Street. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is the major fund-raising event of the organization. This year’s gala will feature both silent and live auctions as well as live music from the Frank Ray Band and an opportunity to hit the dance floor, all while helping finance scholarships for local students. The meal for the event is being catered by 1836 Texas Kitchen. more
The First Ladies Officers traveled to Rockwall this past week to attend the American Dance and Drill Team Officer Camp. They were among over 30 different schools that were represented. Throughout the three day camp, the officers attended leadership sessions, learned new choreography, and performed their home routine, camp dance, and a creative choreography piece.  The officers worked hard to set goals for the upcoming school year as well as pushed themselves to become stronger dancers. more
Various colleges have named students to their President’s and Dean’s lists for spring 2018. In each instance, in order to qualify for the Principal’s list, a student must maintain a 4.0 grade point average and take a full course load of at least 12 semester hours of undergraduate credit. Morgan Andie McCoy, of Whitehouse, was among 234 students honored for academic success at Howard Payne University and was named to the President’s list. more
Baylor University, the oldest continuously operating university in Texas, conferred degrees on a record number of nearly 3,000 graduates during three spring commencement exercises May 11-12 in the Ferrell Center on the Baylor campus. Samantha Paige DuVall, of Whitehouse, was among the graduates and received Bachelor of Science in Education, Health Science Studies, graduating magna cum laude. more
The newest member to the Troup Independent School District Board of Trustees was introduced Monday, June 11, at the board meeting. Superintendent Tammy Jones formally introduced Joe Morris and welcomed him to the board. Students in the first- and second-grades involved in the reading acceleration program had the opportunity to display their improved skills as they read to TISD trustees. more
Whitehouse High School has a new principal though he is a familiar face to many within the district. Josh Garred has 18 years experience in education, 12 of those in administration, the last four of which were spent as principal of Whitehouse Junior High School. more
