It’s fair to say Haleigh Latham is a leap-of-faith kind of person. Latham, who graduated from Tyler Junior College Friday, May 11, accepted a full-ride, transfer scholarship to Baylor University before ever setting foot on its campus. more
The Arp Independent School District has announced that it is participating in the Lending Grant Initiative through the Texas Education Agency. The grant amount is based on district size and totals $50,000. The funds will provide junior high and high school students various electronic devices including iPads, netbooks and laptops. The devices are specific to the content used by the particular grade level of the student, according to Dr. Joy Rousseau, Arp ISD Technology Director. more
Many recognitions were made during the regular monthly meeting of the Troup ISD board of trustees meeting held Thursday, May 10. Karyn Ard was introduced by Bobby Dyess and recognized as Teacher of the Year. Dyess also introduced the high school student of the month, Joshua Williams. more
Two students of the Whitehouse UIL academic team became state champions and were noted at the WISD board meeting Monday, May 14. Tasnia Bari was first in the biology contest in science and was recognized during the meeting. Kate McLeod won in the news writing portion of the journalism contests, but was not present at the meeting. “To be the state champion in anything in Texas is a big deal and we’ve got two state champions this year in UIL academics,” said Dr. Chris Moran, WISD superintendent. “We are so proud of you.” more

Only 5.33 percent of Smith County voters cast a ballot during the Saturday, May 5, elections, according to Smith County reports. Percentages for specific precincts were not available and the results of the elections were unofficial at the time of this report. Votes cast for Troup Independent School board of trustee candidates were nearly evenly split between early voting ballots and those cast on Election Day with a small percentage of mail in votes being received. TISD will canvass the vote on Thursday, May 10, during the regular board meeting. more
Great news as preliminary STAAR results come in at Whitehouse ISD. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Trampas Bass has received preliminary STAAR results for fifth- and eighth-graders in Whitehouse and the campuses are celebrating. more
