Only 5.33 percent of Smith County voters cast a ballot during the Saturday, May 5, elections, according to Smith County reports. Percentages for specific precincts were not available and the results of the elections were unofficial at the time of this report. Votes cast for Troup Independent School board of trustee candidates were nearly evenly split between early voting ballots and those cast on Election Day with a small percentage of mail in votes being received. TISD will canvass the vote on Thursday, May 10, during the regular board meeting. more
Great news as preliminary STAAR results come in at Whitehouse ISD. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Trampas Bass has received preliminary STAAR results for fifth- and eighth-graders in Whitehouse and the campuses are celebrating. more

First graders at three local elementary schools were recently given free prevent tooth decay kits through the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club by members of Henry Marsh Bell Masonic Lodge, led by Greg Burkhart. The Masons assembled and delivered more than 225 dental hygiene kits to first graders at Brown Elementary, Cain Elementary and Troup Elementary schools in Whitehouse ISD and Troup ISD. The Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, sponsored by Masonic Home and School of Texas (MHS) strives to prevent suffering from toothaches, reduce missed school days due to dental problems and cut costs for dental treatment. more
Teacher Appreciation Week was Monday-Friday, April 30-May 4, and the Troup Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) made every effort to make certain the Troup Elementary teachers felt appreciated. “The Troup Elementary PTO supports our teachers and students throughout the year,” stated Melanie Johnson, principal at Troup Elementary. “Their efforts during Teacher Appreciation Week are simply amazing. Year in and year out, this organization provides our staff with thoughtful gifts and great food. I know that the teachers look forward to this week all year. I really would like to thank all of the Troup Elementary PTO, past and present, for their support.”v more
Patriotic pride will return to the city of Bullard, as The American Freedom Museum will take time to honor the sacrifices made by veterans at the upcoming East Texas Salute 2018 event, to be held 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, on the museum’s grounds, located on the campus of The Brook Hill Upper School. “The East Texas Salute provides the opportunity for the citizens and students of East Texas to show their appreciation for the sacrifices of our military men and women, to acknowledge their courage, and to show them the honor and support they have earned,” said Jan Hommel, director of the American Freedom Museum. more
Whitehouse ISD Education Foundation honored the Innovators of the Year, along with all of this year’s grant recipients, and thanked their sponsors Saturday, April 28. The annual Celebration of Innovation banquet took place at K.E. Bushman’s in Bullard and featured a Taste of the Town, selected menu items provided by various area restaurants. more
Higgins Elementary has a new piece of playground equipment installed thanks to the efforts of Dwayne Spangler, Whitehouse High School senior. Spangler chose to build a tire swing at Higgins as his Eagle Scout project. Spangler joined Cub Scouts while in the first grade and crossed over into Boy Scouts in 2011. more
