A mistrial was declared last week in a trial involving a Smith County Commissioner accused of assaulting an elderly woman inside of a Smith County church in 2017. Smith County Precinct 4 Commissioner JoAnn Hampton appeared in the 241st District Court inside the Smith County Courthouse Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 12-14, for her trail after having been indicted by a Smith County grand jury on two counts of Injury to an Elderly Individual last September. more
The primary election season is now in full swing across the State of Texas, as early voting began on Tuesday, Feb. 20. As an open primary state, any registered voter in Texas is allowed to take part in either the Democrat or Republican primary, but not in both. One’s vote in the primary does not obligate an individual to vote for any specific party or candidate during the general election. The State Republican Executive Committee approved placing 11 propositions on the March Republican primary ballot. more
Everyone knows that the Valentine’s Day holiday is associated with the emotion of love. For one group of students attending Bullard Middle School, it also represents a time to give back to those who need to feel love. For several years, the BMS Builders Club has partnered with local radio stations 89.5 FM KVNE and 91.3 FM KGLY to help out with creating and sorting a thousands of handmade Valentine’s Day cards that come into the radio studio through the annual Valentines for Kids and Seniors in Assisted Living Facilities project. more
The spotlight was shining brightly on three successful fine arts programs within Bullard Independent School District, as students, as well as their talents and abilities, were on full display at the Bullard Middle School Fine Arts Showcase, held Monday, Jan. 22, inside the BMS gymnasium. According to Alison Walker, BMS pom squad director and BMS Fine Arts event organizer, the event allowed three BMS fine arts programs to showcase their students’ talents while also serving as a preparation performance for events scheduled in the spring semester. more
Ted Kamel is looking to retake his former seat in the Texas House of Representatives, as he announced his campaign for State Representative District 6, against incumbent Rep. Matt Schaefer, last October. Kamel served in the role as District 6 representative for a total of four terms, from 1991 to 1999. During his time in the Texas House, he passed 50 bills, including expanding The University of Texas at Tyler to a four year university and creating the UT Tyler School of Engineering. more
Two men from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex were arrested last week after an investigation by the Tyler Police Department led to the discovery of a credit card skimming device on a gasoline pump in the city of Bullard. more
Local dog lovers can now help a local animal shelter while interacting with several pets who will soon be adopted. The animal shelter is accepting applications from people who would like to volunteer to assist with cleaning duties, as well as photographing, washing, grooming and walking dogs available for adoption. The applications are available at the shelter, located at 322 E. Ferguson, which is open from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. more
