In 2005 during the shooting at the Smith County Courthouse, Smith County Sheriff’s Office Detective Sherman Dollison was shot numerous times. Two other people lost their lives that day. Detective Dollison’s heroic actions that day certainly prevented other innocent bystanders from being injured or killed. After years of medical treatment as a result of his wounds, Detective Dollison is now on dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant. One of Detective Dollison’s co-workers, Detective Josh Hill was tested and has shown to be a match. Detective Hill has made the decision to give Detective Dollison one of his kidneys. more

The summer break for Texas lawmakers will have to wait, as a special session has been called by the governor, sending lawmakers back to work to finish working on legislation from the recently convened 86th legislative session. On Tuesday, June 6, Texas Governor Greg Abbott called a special session of the state Legislature with a list of 20 priorities for lawmakers to work on, including but not limited to the state’s controversial “bathroom bill,” a pay raise for Texas teachers, and school finance reform. more

Anna Armstrong, a May graduate of Tyler Junior College and a biology major, is one of several students selected to participate in a summer research academy. A Whitehouse native, Armstrong is spending the summer conducting biological research at Imperial College in London, England. She was also selected as a 2017 Coca-Cola Gold Academic Team member and scholarship recipient. She will attend the University of Boston in the fall. more
