Troup held its annual Christmas in the Country the evening of Monday, Nov. 13. The new street lights shined while Christmas songs played from a loudspeaker on the sidewalk. Though the weather wasn’t exactly crisp, it wasn’t altogether warm either. Shoppers visited with one another as they sampled food offerings of vegetables and dip, cheese and crackers, cookies and even meatballs. Christmas music played in every store while customers browsed and made purchases. Lisa and Greg Fleck, managers of Hope Restored, said they have been a part of the Christmas in the Country event for the past five years. more

Martin Wesley Reynolds Jr., 21, of Whitehouse, was jailed Sunday, Nov. 5, on the charge of murder according to Smith County jail records. “At 1:17 a.m., Smith County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence in the 8800 block of Deerwood Drive in Smith County,” states an SCSO press release. more
The Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office remained on the scene Monday morning of a structure fire that damaged one business and completely destroyed another in the southwest part of the county. more
Residents from the Oak Brook Health Care Center in Whitehouse brought home the first place trophy from the 36th Senior Olympic Games held Nov. 2 at Harvey Hall in Tyler. Oak Brook seniors participated in a variety of events including walking races, a spelling bee, domino and horse shoe tournaments, a baseball throwing contest and wheelchair races among others, stated activities director, Shanna Kennedy. more
