Darkness and division. That’s what most of the evening television news seems to portray and I often get the idea that the world has gone wrong, or simply gone mad. However, I have found hope. I didn’t find it on the world stage, in celebrities or in our government. I have found it much closer to home. I take encouragement, not in the stories I write, but in the people behind them. more
In the past few years, I have watched more and more marriages fall apart. While some of these marriages were ones that began on shaky ground, some of them were people I never expected to see break up. The longer I live, the older I get, the more I realize that there are no ‘safe’ relationships. The truth is, we all struggle and we all must fight to keep things together. Even the most secure marriages can face trials. more
It’s a heart-shaped grave marker in the May, TX, cemetery for a not-quite 15 year-old girl who fought the good fight. On one side are Jesus’ words from the Book of John: “I am the resurrection and the life…whoever believes in Me shall never die.” On the other side are engravings of a dog and panda bear. Those closest to Katherine Marie Hester during her short life--one darkened by health complications beginning at birth--understood love’s depth for her Lord, family and friends. She also loved her Jack Russell terrier Rosie, and was fascinated by pandas. more
Let’s face it long-range planning is a lot like dieting: it’s something we’ll start tomorrow. I love facilitating other people’s long range planning, but put off my own. Here we are in March and I am still trying to plan the rest of this year’s topics for Fireside Talk Radio. Groan. more
This past Monday was what I consider the perfect spring day. The sun was shining yet the temperature was relatively cool at 63 degrees in late afternoon. What a perfect way to start the week of Spring Break. So what did I do on such a lovely spring day? I worked ... inside. The weather certainly called me to come outdoors. For all the students in our families, Spring Break is here. By the time you read this, most of the local school districts will only have a few more days of a break before they must head back to campus. And with Spring Break comes a special illness that seems to seep into all the schools about this time every year. I’ve seen it affect the faculty and staff of each campus and the families of our students as well. It is especially bad for the eldest students on our campuses, even bearing its own name for the seniors. more
When the word “culture” is heard these days, one does well to think of buttermilk, whether or not it “does a body good.” Even though our understanding of buttermilk is exceedingly vague, it seems degree-worthy when compared to our comprehension of current world culture that is cratering all around us. more
Right after I became a Christian in the early 80s, I attended a conference for college students in Dallas. In the days before cell phones, pay phones adorned a long wall in the lobby of this fancy conference hotel, like a row of slot machines. During a break in the seminars, I grabbed a roll of dimes and called every friend I had in Dallas, inviting them to join me. Josh McDowell was a popular key note speaker and there was buzz about his talk that evening. “This is Cathy Primer. I’m in Dallas for a conference. more
Technology has advanced quite a bit over the last few decades and can now serve a variety of purposes. I remember the time when desk top computers required most of your desk top space. Now they are … more
For many years when my kids were young, I was a member of every Bible study class for ladies that my church offered. I went from one Beth Moore study to another for several years, then threw in some … more
